Who among us doesn’t love a tasty stimulant from Starbucks every now and then? Not only can our landmark orders give us a boost of energy to tackle the day, but the great flavor of our favorite coffee drinks can also make our taste buds happier than ever. Unfortunately, however, they may not be the best choice for our body. In fact, many of the most popular Starbucks drinks out there are actually terrible for your overall health, especially those infamous Frappuccinos, which come with their own set of risks, including a slowed metabolism.

To get a sense of the risks at hand and find out about some of the worst Starbucks drinks out there, we checked in with registered dietitian Sara Chatfield. She said calories and sugar can be serious risk factors.

Regular consumption of high-calorie coffee drinks can lead to weight gain, especially since our bodies don’t register the calories we drink in the same way we do with food, so you may feel hungry again sooner after consuming high-calorie drinks, warns Chatfield. Regular consumption of extra added sugar from flavored coffee drinks can lead to a number of health problems such as high blood sugar, inflammation, increased belly fat, tooth decay, and a higher risk of chronic health problems such as heart disease. Damn!

Below, we highlight three of the most high-calorie and sugar-laden Starbucks drinks you should steer clear of for your health: Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino, White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino, AND Crunchy Caramel Frappuccino.

1. Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino

Cookies and coffee are a match made in flavor heaven. Unfortunately, though, this amazing flavor comes at a cost. Chatfield points out that a Grande Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino has “a whopping 480 calories, 24 grams of fat (15 of which are saturated), and 55 grams of sugar.” Say it is not so!

“For most people that’s a huge part of their calories and saturated fat limit for the day. And it’s more than double the amount of sugar recommended by health experts,” she warns.

White chocolate and mocha frappuccino

Maybe you are a white chocolate lover. (We don’t blame you, even though dark chocolate is always a better option for your health). As it turns out, this is another poor choice if you’re trying to lose weight or just keep fit. A large size of this drink comes in at 430 calories, 18 grams of fat (12 grams saturated fat) and 53 grams of sugar. Talk about a sugar rush!

“That’s a huge amount of calories for one drink, over half the recommended daily limit for saturated fat, and over double the expert-recommended sugar limit,” Chatfield tells us.

Crunchy Caramel Frappuccino

And if you prefer caramel, we’ve got some bad news in that department, too. Like its cookie crumble and white chocolate counterparts, a Crunchy Caramel Ribbon Frappuccino is surprisingly loaded with calories. 470 in a large, to be exact.

“This drink can really make a dent in your daily calorie intake,” notes Chatfield. “It also has 14 grams of saturated fat, more than half of the recommended daily limit, and a whopping 60 grams of sugar.” Again, drinking this will get you more than double your recommended sugar intake for an entire day.

What to order instead

So if Frappuccinos are banned, what Candies do you order at starbucks? While it can be difficult for those of us with a sweet tooth, Chatfield says, “it’s best to stick to plain coffee or add a splash of your favorite latte.” In fact, black coffee can actually help you lose weight!

There are also cold options that are better for your health than these frozen drinks: “If you’re looking for a cold beverage, try an iced coffee, drip coffee or espresso, or plain iced black or green tea,” she advises.

While your Frappuccino habit may be hard to kick, it will be worth it in the end.
